The Space 1026 art collective was invited to create an installation on paper at BravinLee programs. Inspired by themes of repetition and pattern in many of the members' individual work and by the massive scale of their previous collaborative installations, they were asked to produce a piece that would explore and celebrate a love of mark-making. The curator's rules: nothing figurative, every bit of white wall was to be covered, and every mark made must be repeated. Space 1026's rules: no egos, and no black.
Each participating member submitted a silkscreen prepared with a pattern they had designed for the show. During one week in July, 2007, the artists set to work in the gallery printing and drawing these designs over and over building lush, chaotic collaged matrices of color and form. These prints were then re-configured again and were sewn together to create a paper tapestry that floated over the entire vertical surface of the gallery’s main room. |
